  1. Keep fire protection measures in good condition.

While it may appear simple, it is critical that your company not only knows the necessity of putting functional smoke alarms on every level of your building, but also that you test them monthly. When selecting the correct smoke alarm system, it’s preferable to go with one that can be networked, so that when one alarm goes off, they all go off.

In addition to smoke alarms, your business should consider adding sprinkler systems. Sprinkler systems not only protect over 99 percent of buildings from fire damage, but they also prevent further damage. After they have been installed, you should develop a regular practice to inspect them for potential maintenance that may be required.

  1. Keep an eye out for overloaded circuits and extension cables.

Cords are one item that businesses don’t have a shortage of. With laptops, additional displays, phones, and personnel gadgets, outlets may become congested as everything works to fit. With this increased workload, overheating might become a serious issue. Check the fit of the plug in the outlet before using it to avoid loose electrical connections. A faulty connection can cause overheating, which can easily ignite a fire. Avoid putting cables or wires under carpets or in high-traffic areas as well.

  1. Don’t forget to bring your fire extinguishers.

Fire extinguishers may be excellent at extinguishing minor flames and stopping them from escalating into larger ones, but they can’t do so if they’re concealed in a closet and no one knows where they are. To make them useful, place them in a prominent, easily accessible position, and make sure that numerous individuals in the workplace are aware of where they are and how they work. They, like your other fire safety devices, must be examined periodically by a certified specialist, and any old or expired extinguishers must be replaced.

  1. Maintain a clean environment

A congested and overcrowded environment can not only add gasoline to the fire (literally), but it can also be dangerous for personnel attempting to flee the building after the fire alarms sound. From being a possible trip hazard and blocking emergency exits to producing extra combustible material that aids in the development of a fire, not having a clean area might result in significant injury.

Don’t forget about the break room! Along with keeping the room clean, double-check that all appliances are appropriately positioned to allow air to flow and keep them cool.

  1. Make a fire escape plan.

While practicing fire prevention should be a primary concern, it’s also critical to have a plan in place in case the worst happens. Ensure that everyone on your team is aware of the plan, that you have numerous exits based on where they are in the workplace, and that you have designated an outside meeting area that is a safe distance away from your building. Assign a trusted employee the job of safety officer to assist maintain the plan and all of your safety activities up to date. More importantly, practice makes perfect. You never know when a fire may start, and if one does, everyone should understand their duty, what they need to do, and where they need to go.
